Another Early Bird Bonspiel is in the books. This year's fall in-house mixed event was a fun and exciting one and thanks go out to event co-chairs Sarah Brubaker and Stephanie Long along with all volunteers and participants.
Winning the A event was skip Greg Foster with Bailey Van Deest, Max Dumicich and Ashlyn Casey. Wendy Berger and her team, Eric Colvin, Anne Salerno and Jim Van Buren were the runners up. In the B event, it was Ed Springstead with Winn Schwartz, Solon Boomer-Jenks and Michael Hall defeating Spencer Kocjan and his team, Lisa Len, Greg Stapleton and Elizabeth Nowiki.
For many, however, the highlight of bonspiel came not in the Sunday finals, but Friday evening when spouses Ed and Flo Springstead led their teams in an exciting matchup. Both had been curling for 35 years, but they had never played on opposing teams. By the luck of the bonspiel bracket, that streak finally came to an end. With many friendly wagers in place, a good-sized crowd formed in the warm room as the first end kicked off and it continued to grow as the game progressed. Team Ed took the early lead, but Team Flo slowly chipped away and tied it up after eight ends. Flo threw the tiebreaking skip stone and the warm room crowd went wild, cheering loud enough that the teams on the ice just may have heard the plate glass vibrating. It was a moment that will long be remembered in the history of the Albany Curling Club. Congratulations go out to both Flo and Ed for such an exciting matchup!
